The Scalawag

January 23, 2010

Flor de Caña 7 year rum
John T. Taylor's Velvet Falernum
lime juice
pineapple
ginger

Muddle pineapple and ginger. Combine ingredients, shake and fine-strain into a collins glass. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wedge.

Another juicy-tart rum drink to help us forget that El Niño has been drenching us this winter.

T Rex

January 22, 2010

Arette reposado tequila
Aperol
lime juice
blood orange juice
Small Hand Foods gum syrup

Shake everything but the blood orange juice and strain into a pilsner glass. Add a bit of soda and squeeze half of a blood orange on top. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Owners Phil and Cameron West brought their son Sam in to celebrate his second birthday, and since it was a dinosaur-themed birthday we went with a dinosaur-themed drink name. We also all wore temporary tattoos of dinosaurs. Mine was a Triceratops.

Blood & Tears

January 21, 2010

Chivas Regal blended scotch
Dubonnet rouge
house-made cherry brandy
blood orange juice

Shake ingredients and fine-strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon ribbon.

You guessed it... a little twist on the ol' Blood & Sand, which is scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry brandy, and orange juice. Our version is a little more tart, and (if I may be so bold) much prettier.

El Conquistador

January 20, 2010

Siete Leguas silver tequila
Marie Brizard Apry
blood orange juice

Once again: Tequila + blood orange = yum.

Camino Real

January 19, 2010

Hendrick's gin
Grüner Veltliner (dry white wine)
lavender honey
saffron cardamom bitters

Stir and serve in a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange ribbon.

Brooke was inspired by a cocktail she had at Camino in Oakland.

Applejack Sour

January 18, 2010

Laird's Applejack
lemon juice
orange juice
egg white
Meyer's lemon syrup
Regan's orange bitters

Dry shake. Shake and fine-strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with orange zest.

This was like a north-of-the-border Pisco Sour. The only think wrong with them was that they went down so fast.

Mandarin Caipirinha

January 17, 2010

Sagatiba cachaca
lime juice
4 mandarin segments
agave nectar

Muddle mandarin, combine ingredients and shake. Pour contents (including ice) into a bucket.

Twist on a classic that makes us wish it weren't raining!

Monk's Blood

January 16, 2010

Flor de Caña 7 year rum
Santa Teresa Orange Rhum liqueur
Yellow Chartreuse
blood orange
lemon juice
cinnamon bitters

Muddle 1/4 blood orange (peeled). Combine and shake ingredients. Fine strain into a bucket and garnish with a blood orange half-moon.

There's something about blood oranges that makes people go crazy. We used up two and a half bottles of rum that night, which means that one out of four people ordered a Monk's Blood.

BBP

Zubrowka vodka
Lillet Blanc
mandarin
lemon juice
salt
simple syrup

Muddle mandarin, combine and shake ingredients. Fine strain into a collins glass and top with soda. Garnish with three thinly sliced kumquats.

You'll just have to come in and ask Brooke what "BBP" means!

January 14, 2010

Bulleit bourbon
Lillet
honey
bergamot juice
angostura orange bitters

Four on the Flor

January 13, 2010

Flor de Cana 4 year rum

Averna

I went to Smuggler's Cove the other night and had a delicious drink... then copied it. They have the best rum selection in SF. Go NOW!!!

Mandarin Blossom

January 12, 2010

Hendrick's gin
Noily Pratt dry vermouth
Mandarin orange
lavender honey
lemon juice

Muddle half of a mandarin, combine ingredients and shake. Fine-strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon twist.

Clean and fresh. The lavender does a little dance with the rose in the Hendrick's, but it's not too floral.

New York Sour

January 11, 2010

Old Overholt rye
Cinzano sweet vermouth
lemon juice
sugar

Shake and serve on the rocks in a bucket. Float a juicy red wine on top and garnish with a brandied cherry.

A simple little thang taken from Mr. Boston's.

Up To Date Cocktail

January 10, 2010

Buffalo Trace bourbon
oloroso sherry
lime juice
sugar
large orange chunk
Angostura bitters

Muddle the orange, sugar and bitters. Combine ingredients, shake, and fine-strain into an ice-filled bucket. Garnish with an orange ribbon.

This is our take on a Savoy Cocktail Book drink. Theirs is served up and has Grand Marnier instead of the fresh muddled orange.

La Freniere

January 9, 2010

Zubrowka vodka
Dubonet rouge
tangerine (skin on)
lemon juice
agave nectar

Muddle a quarter of a tangerine. Shake it all and fine-strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon chip.

This is one of Mike LaFreniere's concoctions. We love it when Mike fills in behind the bar. He's damn funny, and he creates some of the most delicious drinks in town. Have you tried the Chili Davis? 'Nuff said.

Catcher in the Rye

January 8, 2010

Wild Turkey 101 rye
amontillado sherry
Torani Amer
Grand Marnier

January 7, 2010

Martin Miller's gin
clove-infused Sagatiba cachaca
honey
lemon juice
orange juice

Shake and fine-strain into a cocktail glass. Garnished with a clove-spiked brandied cherry.

This is a Range-ified twist on a classic cocktail. We just added the cloviness.

Orangutan

January 6, 2010

Bulleit bourbon
Cinzano sweet vermouth
persimmon puree
lemon juice
cinnamon bitters

Shake and fine-strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange ribbon.

Persimmons can be tough to muddle because they have to be almost too ripe to handle. We made a puree (with a little lemon juice), and ta-dah! Great viscosity and richness.

The Resolution

New Years Eve, 2009!!

Siete Leguas silver tequila
prickly pear puree
meyers lemon juice
buddha's hand citrus syrup

Flor de Cana 4 year rum
Cinzano sweet vermouth

creme de cocoa
grenadine

This 1920s classic was named after a famous bar in Cuba, and is surprisingly balanced, considering all the sweet ingredients.

Hazelnut Old Fashioned

December 29, 2009

hazelnut/star anise-infused Cerbois Armagnac
Cynar
cinnamon bitters

Stir ingredients. Zest a large lemon peel into a rocks glass and coat the rim with lemon oils. Fill with ice and strain into glass. Garnish with lemon ribbon.

It's easy to forget to linger over this smooth spicy treat... goes down smooooth.

Fourth Rail

December 28, 2009

Siete Leguas reposado tequila
Lillet blanc
honey
lemon juice
small chunk of orange (peel on)
Fee Brothers orange bitters

Shake ingredients with a chunk of orange in the shaker. Fine strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with an orange twist.

A little agave-love twist on the bourbon based Range classic, The Third Rail. Go light on the bitters when using tequila, but pour it on with the original.

Rosita

December 27, 2009

Siete Leguas reposado tequila
Cinzano sweet vermouth
Noily Pratt dry vermouth
Campari
Angostura bitters

Stir and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange chip.

It's a tequila Negroni. Less bitter, mas fuego.

Evergreen

December 23, 2009

Plymouth gin
Saint Germain elderflower liqueur
kumquats
sage
lemon juice

Muddle the kumquats and sage. Shake ingredients and fine-strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a sage leaf.

A Range classic from '07. It's perfectly balanced, complex and herbaceous, and will be going on the list immediately!

Orange Hill

December 22, 2009

Appleton overproof rum
clove-infused cachaca
persimmon puree
lime juice
Bundaberg ginger beer

Solstice Mai Tai

December 21, 2009

Flor de Cana 4 year rum
Gosling's Black Seal rum
Velvet Falernum

Muddle pineapple. Shake everything but the Gosling's and fine-strain into a bucket. Float a little black rum and garnish with fresh mint.

The shortest day of the year deserves a tropical cocktail. Only six more months 'til summer!

Pineapple Express

December 20, 2009

Pueblo Viejo silver tequila
Punt e Mes
pineapple
fresno chili
lime juice

Muddle pineapple and chili. Shake and strain into a bucket. Garnish with a pineapple leaf.

Spicy-sweet goodness.
