El Palomino

April 29, 2010

Oloroso sherry
209 gin
strawberry
sparkling white wine

Muddle a medium strawberry. Combine all but the sparkling wine, shake and fine-strain into a champagne flute. Top with sparkling wine. Garnish with a lemon twist.

This cocktail has a classic aperitif profile: Clean and crisp, but with enough intriguing herbal-fruit notes to really wake up your appetite. The name comes from the Palomino Fino grape from which sherry is made.

The Aztec

April 28, 2010

Siete Leguas reposado tequila
lemon juice
orange juice
agave nectar
Fee Brothers Aztec chocolate bitters

Shake and fine-strain into a cocktail glass. garnish with a thin orange slice.

This one starts out with a nice citrus burst then finishes with subtle, lingering, bitter-chocolate notes.

London Buck

April 27, 2010

Boodle's gin
lemon juice
Bundaberg ginger beer

Build in a collins glass. Garnish with a lemon ribbon.

Like a Dark and Stormy, but not so dark. Love the gin/ginger combo.

Ragtime

April 26, 2010

Rittenhouse rye 100 proof
Carpano Antica sweet vermouth
Amaro Nonino
Fee Brothers whiskey barrel bitters

Stir and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a short lemon ribbon.

Mmmm... boozy.

Ginger Rogers

April 25, 2010

Hendrick's gin
Canton ginger liqueur
lime juice
mint

Gently muddle the mint, then build in a pilsner glass. Roll a few times and top with soda water. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

We took Absinthe's recipe and tweaked it a bit with the Canton. Stealing is fun!

Short Story

April 23, 2010

Siete Leguas reposado tequila
Luxardo maraschino liqueur
lemon juice
grapefruit juice
Peychaud's bitters

Shake all but the bitters, strain into a bucket. Dash some bitters on the surface, and garnish with triangles of grapefruit.

This is a little tequila twist on the Hemmingway, plus a bit-o-bitters.

Widow's Kiss

April 22, 2010

Laird's Applejack
Yellow Chartreuse
Benedictine
Angostura bitters

Stir and serve in a cocktail glass. Garnish with a brandied cherry.

The original uses Green Chartreuse and calvados. It also calls for way more of both Benedictine and Chartreuse than we found palatable, so we changed it up.

Tally Ho!

April 21, 2010

Beefeater gin
Dolin sweet vermouth
strawberry
Regan's orange bitters

Muddle the berry, shake it, and fine-strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Mmmmmm.... ginny!

Pisco Punch

April 20, 2010

Machu Pisco
Navarro Pinot Noir grape juice
Small Hand Foods pineapple gum syrup
tangerine juice
chunk of lemon
dash of absinthe

Squeeze the tangerine into a pint glass and place the spent rind in a bucket. Muddle the lemon, combine ingredients, shake and strain into the bucket.

This crazy combination of ingredients came together beautifully. Party in a glass...

Sweet Leaf

April 19, 2010

Arette reposado tequila
Blandy's madiera
small strawberry
cilantro
Reagan's orange bitters

Muddle the strawberry and cilantro, combine and shake ingredients. Fine-strain into a bucket, and garnish with a sprig of cilantro.

I was just curious about how people would react to cilantro in a cocktail, so I made this drink that was pretty tame, aside from said herb. Results? Not so popular... turns out that I should have taken that article about cilantro in the New York Times a little more seriously!

Strawberry Margarita

April 18, 2010

Arette reposado tequila
strawberry
lime juice
agave nectar

Muddle the strawberry, shake it up and strain into a bucket. Garnish with a slice of strawberry.

Once again, a no-brainer. Guess we still hadn't recovered from Brooke's departure!

April 17, 2010

Flor de Caña 4 year rum
Santa Teresa Rhum Orange liqueur
lemon juice
lime juice
strawberry

Muddle the strawberry, shake and strain into a collins glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

After the craziness of the previous night, we just needed a no-brainer. Done and done.

Brooklyn

April 16, 2010

Rittenhouse 100 proof rye
Luxardo Maraschino
Amer Picon
Dolin dry vermouth

Stir and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange ribbon.

This was Brooke's last cocktail of the day at Range, and we made about 8000 of 'em. We're gonna miss you Brooke!

The Taxman

April 15, 2010

Flor de Caña 4 year rum
Diplomatico rum
Vya dry vermouth
lime juice
guava
simple syrup

Muddle the guava and shake all but the dark rum. Fine-strain into a collins glass and float the Diplomatico. Garnish with a lime.

Just pretend you lived on some remote island and didn't have to pay taxes. This is what you'd be drinking.

Post Script

April 14, 2010

Hendrick's gin
Yellow Chartreuse
Luxardo Maraschino
lime juice
strawberry

Muddle the strawberry, shake, fine-strain into a cocktail glass. No garnish.

Yes, this is a play on the Last Word, but we backed off the liqueurs and used yellow in place of green Chartreuse to let the strawberry shine.
